This is, quite simply, the best and most popular puzzle book ever published in the Soviet Union. Since its first appearance in 1956 there have been eight editions as well as translations from the original Russian into Ukrainian, Estonian, Lettish, and Lithuanian. Almost a million copies of the Russian version alone have been sold.
Part of the reason for the book's success is its marvelously varied assortment of brainteasers ranging from simple "catch" riddles to difficult problems (none, however, requiring advanced mathematics). Many of the puzzles will be new to Western readers, while some familiar problems have been clothed in new forms. Often the puzzles are presented in the form of charming stories that provide non-Russian readers with valuable insights into contemporary Russian life and customs. In addition, Martin Gardner, former editor of the Mathematical Games Department, Scientific American, has clarified and simplified the book to make it as easy as possible for an English-reading public to understand and enjoy. He has been careful, moreover, to retain nearly all the freshness, warmth, and humor of the original.
Lavishly illustrated with over 400 clear diagrams and amusing sketches, this inexpensive edition of the first English translation will offer weeks or even months of stimulating entertainment. It belongs in the library of every puzzlist or lover of recreational mathematics.Product details

This book has been a classic in the former Soviet Union since it was first published in 1956, and it remains just as entertaining today. A master at making math fun for his high school students, Boris Kordemsky loaded this clever collection with a wide variety of math and logic related games and puzzles dealing with magic squares, tricky weights and measures, properties of numbers, mathematical tricks, and more. Number and math game fans are bound to find several new amusements here. Even many of the well-known classics from generations past take on new life with the fresh twists Kordemsky provides.

Solid Translation and Fun for Adults and Children Alike

Officially, I am addicted to Moscow Puzzles. I think these brain teasers really tested my old elementary through grade school knowledge. My brother and I had a lot of fun trying to solve these. They brought me back to my childhood. If you like thought exercises and IQ tests, you will enjoy these. They have a variety of difficulty levels. There are an assortment of puzzles to choose from. I think if you like whimsical puzzles, you will enjoy these. They were written for children but have clever math implications. The book is inexpensive for the quality and number of puzzles available. You have over 200+ of puzzles.

I've read through a few with my 10 yo son hoping that he'll get a sense of application of critical thinking and math skills in real life rather than just the multiplication tables and division he's learning in school. There are different levels of questions. There are just more than I would like that require "props" to work out ( a chapter on logic around use of dominos- which I don't have and others where you have to trace, cut out, and then rearrange figures)

For those people who want to find the answer and love math problems and solving them- this is right up your calculating alley!

For my mathematical son who turned 14 & is so hard to buy gifts for- he and his dad are enjoying the puzzles in this book- if your the kind of person oh wants to seek out the answer and love math, this is for you....I tend to want to know if the trains hit each other who was responsible for the error and why can't they just get their own apples- so it's not for me...but they love it- an engineer and his "clone" ha ha!

Nice puzzles but reading these puzzles on Kindle is not convenient.

Nice puzzles, some of them are already well known from other books. The main problem is that reading these puzzles on Kindle is not convenient.

Liked it so much I bought one for the teacher - now they'll also be in class!

Thoroughly enjoyed by a 12-year-old who loves maths and finds the curriculum a little 'unchallenging'. Bought one for the maths teacher, who later admitted that she couldn't stop doing them either!
From easy to most difficult; something for all maths enthusiasts.

Best book of logic puzzles we own. Fun for our whole family to work through them.
ByMark BTOP 1000 REVIEWERon October 17, 2016|Verified Purchase
Our favorite puzzle book. Lots of puzzles to keep you thinking. Gets you to think outside the box! Our family loves to read through one of the puzzles and then let it simmer for a few days to see who can come up with a solution. Many of the puzzles are tricky word problems, mixed with excellent logic problems. Great book.

The puzzles seem too obscure. Don't think I'll be using it with my fifth-grade students.
