    Amazon.com Review

Considered the best mystery novel ever written by many readers, And Then There Were None is the story of 10 strangers, each lured to Indian Island by a mysterious host. Once his guests have arrived, the host accuses each person of murder. Unable to leave the island, the guests begin to share their darkest secrets--until they begin to die. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

    Review

“The whole thing is utterly impossible and utterly fascinating. It is the most baffling mystery Agatha Christie has ever written.” (New York Times)

“One of the most ingenious thrillers in many a day.” (Time magazine)

“One of the very best, most genuinely bewildering Christies.” (The Observer (UK))

“There is no cheating; the reader is just bamboozled in a straightforward way from first to last….The most colossal achievement of a colossal career. The book must rank with Mrs. Christie’s previous best—on the top notch of detection.” (New Statesman (UK))

“The most astonishingly impudent, ingenious and altogether successful mystery story since The Murder of Roger Ackroyd.” (Daily Herald (UK))

“What Agatha Christie taught me was all about the delicate placement of the red herring. She was the ultimate genius behind ‘by indirections shall we find directions out.’ ” (Elizabeth George, New York Times bestselling author of the Inspector Lynley novels)

Take Your P.C. Junk and [Censored]
    ByMichael J. Melenon July 18, 2016|Verified Purchase
"And Then There Were None" is a brilliant mystery, and I have purchased copies in the double digits and have given them to friends. The one star is for the "William Morrow" published version, one with a photo of people in a boat and trumpeting "Now On Lifetime".

It disgusts me that the pinheads who demand 'political correctness' have tampered with this classic. Yes, I know that the original was even more politically incorrect and was changed by the author. This was not sanctioned by the author, but by clowns. I bought this book expecting Ten Little Indians. To have altered the content of the book without authorization from the author is like defacing Botticelli's "Birth of Venus" because you don't want to see a naked woman. And don't put a diaper on Michelangelo's "David" and tell me it's for my own good.

The product information for this book is misleading. The book was altered to satisfy those who try to force political correctness on others, past, present, and future. I don't want their PC crap. I want the original book. The product information should label the book as being altered, and explain how. Then the purchaser can decide which version they want. That would be the honest way to present this version and others.

The original version, with Ten Little Indians, is a five star book. Clever, well-written, and with a very satisfying ending. My copy is dog-eared from re-reading it every year or two. Even knowing the ending, I marvel at the workmanship of Dame Agatha. I recommend seeking out the version you want, and reading it. I recommend to Amazon that they make it easier for the purchaser to determine which version they are considering. And, yes, it matters.

    lengthy beginning, but worth it
    ByCHARLES J. PARRYon January 17, 2017|Verified Purchase
“And Then There Were None” is a thrilling murder mystery written by Agatha Christie. When ten people are invited to Soldier Island by a mysterious character, U. N. Owen, the guests find themselves in a dangerous situation as they watch each other get picked off one by one according to an old nursery rhyme. The novel keeps you guessing, and chances are you won’t know who the murderer is until the last page of the book. Although I enjoyed reading “And Then There Were None”, it was quite hard to motivate myself to get through the first 40 or so pages. The book begins by describing the characters, which is common in books that were written in the 1930’s. It becomes a lengthy process considering the large amount there are, and was my least favorite part of the book. Not that the old style is bad, but it really shines through considering the first line of the book talks about Mr. Justice Wargrave "In the corner of a first-class smoking carriage" on a train. Aside from that, the book was partly predictable. When and how the murders will occur is easy to guess, but who will die and who did it is up in the air, keeping the mystery present. All in all, the cons are not a reason to forgo reading this book. Lastly, the entire book and murder is psychotic, but in an intriguing way. I was disturbed by the end of the book, only because some of the murders and the plan behind them was simply insane. Having said that, Agatha Christie used this to create another of her thrilling mysteries. I would recommend this book, and the advice I would give to a reader is don’t be discouraged as a result of the beginning. Push through the first few sections, and you’ll find a whole new situation which moves much more quickly.

A Fun Read For Agatha Christie Fans
    ByImjin Scout 67on March 13, 2017|Verified Purchase
I bought this copy to reread this book. I originally read it when I was 12 and really enjoyed it. That was 55 years ago and this time around it was just so so. I'm sure that was due in part because I remembered the main jest of the plot (though not who done it) from having read it those many years ago. If you're reading it for the first time it is an interesting mystery with a unique plot that keeps you wondering. I recommend it to mystery fans and especially if you love Agatha Christie. I gave it 4 stars because I really liked it the first time I read it.

    Greatest work of fiction
ByA. Martinon June 25, 2015|Verified Purchase
“And Then There Were None” is probably Agatha Christie’s best known book and is certainly the best selling. To her it was a challenge to see if she could write a book where ten seemingly random people on a remote island location get killed off one by one , but yet provide a satisfactory conclusion. The critics of the time agreed that she met this challenge and exceeded the very high expectations that the book had. Ms. Christie was pleased by the critical acclaim but she was even more pleased by the fact she too felt she met her challenge which she thought to be her greatest achievement. I would have to agree that this is Ms. Christie’s greatest achievement and is arguably the greatest work of fiction ever produced.
As the story begins we are introduced to the various interesting characters who are making their way to the very remote Soldier Island in Devon. We learn very quickly that there is more to these characters than meets the eye and each seem to possess a significant secret concerning an event from their past. The book is broken into small subchapters and often each subchapter concerns the viewpoint of one of the characters. This is welcome given the amount of characters in this novel and helps make it more readable.
As they approach the Island, Ms. Christie sets up the location perfectly and there is a feeling of inaccessibility about the place. The boat pilot admits that access to the Island is impossible in bad weather and this immediately creates a very tense isolated atmosphere.
Once the guests get settled in and enjoy some dinner (without their host who is mysteriously absent), a mysterious voice booms out accusing each of them of a heinous crime committed some time in the past.
The alarmed guests then put their heads together to try and solve the mystery of who invited them to this isolated destination as they start to meet grizzly ends one by one. As the guests become fewer and fewer the tension builds and builds. Unlike many other whodunits there is a great deal of satisfaction from the tremendous conclusion.
If you are looking for the best mystery story of all time then look no further. You will not be disappointed.
If you enjoyed this book then there are two other books that you may also enjoy. They are both whodunits that I have read recently and are both set in an isolated environment like this masterpiece. They are Murder in Bermuda: An Anna Winters Cozy Mystery (Murder in Paradise Book 1) and Dying for Murder: A Cordi O'Callaghan Mystery and both are well worth a read also.
