The Instant New York Times Bestseller!

James is a street musician struggling to make ends meet.
Bob is a stray cat looking for somewhere warm to sleep.

When James and Bob meet, they forge a never-to-be-forgotten friendship that has been charming readers from Thailand to Turkey.

A Street Cat Named Bob is an international sensation, landing on the bestseller list in England for 52 consecutive weeks and selling in 26 countries around the world. Now, James and Bob are ready to share their true story with the U.S. in this tale unlike any you've ever read of a cat who possesses some kind of magic.

When street musician James Bowen found an injured cat curled up in the hallway of his apartment building, he had no idea how much his life was about to change. James was living hand to mouth on the streets of London, barely making enough money to feed himself, and the last thing he needed was a pet. Yet James couldn't resist helping the strikingly intelligent but very sick animal, whom he named Bob. He slowly nursed Bob back to health and then sent the cat on his way, imagining that he would never see him again. But Bob had other ideas.

This instant classic about the power of love between man and animal has taken the world by storm and is guaranteed to be a huge hit with American fans as well.

    Editorial Reviews

    From Booklist

*Starred Review* Books abound on the subject of how a dog or a cat can rehabilitate a person’s life, but this account of such an event is stellar. Only a heart of stone will not be moved—even to tears—in bearing witness to the love of a London street musician for the gorgeous ginger tomcat he found one day in his apartment building hallway. The cat, soon called Bob, was injured, so Bowen took him in but planned to nurse him only for a short while. After all, so Bowen’s reasoning went, he had very little surplus money to feed another mouth, and Bob, a “man” of the streets, would undoubtedly soon tire of domesticity and one day run away to hit the streets again. But that never happened. Bowen was a recovering addict and was himself recently just off the streets, and he soon established an intensely simpatico relationship with Bob. He fixed Bob up—and fixed Bob—and took him with him every day as he played guitar at the usual corner spots he’d claimed for himself. Bob became an instant attraction, and the result was increased income for Bowen as more money was tossed into his guitar case. This is a beautiful, never maudlin story of second chances for both man and beast and a poignant testimony to how much caring for someone—or some feline—can give you renewed direction when you’re down and out. Understandably, this was a best-seller when first published in Great Britain. --Brad Hooper --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

Saw it today, bought it on kindle and read it over the afternoon!

Don't recall where I saw the book cover early this morning, but I fell in love with Bob's picture and bought the Kindle edition. Downloaded it, got sucked in reading the first few pages and didn't put it down until I'd finished reading it a few hours later.

I laughed out loud and had tears running down my cheeks as I read their very touching and heart-warming story ... and I hated that the book had to end.

Thanks for sharing your stories with us, James and Bob!

    All the best.

Great book, made me laugh and cry

Great book, made me laugh and cry, and I, a lifetime lover and "owner" of cats, was enthralled and delighted and sad and happy. Most of all, I am so happy for James! That Bob has made such a huge difference--and animals do, as they are God's gifts to us--is wonderful, and I pray you, James, continue to grow and thrive and be blessed. Jesus loves you! Thanks for sharing your amazing story and kisses to Bob. :) This is my cat, Ari (his name means Lion) and he has been harness and leased trained since I got him at about 3 months old. He's a rescue, too, but mostly, he rescued me from lonliness. He's my best buddy. :) God bless you, James, and Bob.

    Bob the street cat..

Gosh, can I just start out by saying, I want a cat just like Bob.
James has hard a rough life, and he turned to drugs to help cope. Living his life as a street musician. Coming home one night he spots a roughed up cat on a neighbors mat. Thinking nothing of it, really, he goes into his apartment for the night. Only the cat is there the next night, and the next.
James takes the cat around to the neighbors looking for the owner, but finds none. So James take the cat home, feeds him, and cleans a wound he notices the cat has. James takes him to a vet and gets medication that the cat has to take for a few days so the cat gets to stay. Then the cat gets a name, Bob.
James doesn't want to get attached thinking that Bob will want to return to the streets, only Bob doesn't seem to want to. Then Bob starts joining him at work. A few things happen, I don't want to spoil anything, and James realizes that he and Bob are in this together, he is responsible for another life, and he starts to turn his life around.
This is a beautiful true story of a man, and a cat, getting there second chances in life. And James realizes he needs Bob as much as Bob needs him. They are comfort, friends, soul mates, and this us there story.

    Feel Good Story of Redemption
    ByLynniboon March 17, 2012|Verified Purchase
This is the best read I have had in a long time. First heard about it on TV, where they interviewed the author. It is based on a true story and I would love to see it as a movie. I had a ginger tom who died at the age of 13. He was so sweet a companion but he never did the amazing stuff this cat did. It is as though this cat was sent by God or an angel, to help this man find a sense of guidance and purpose, thus changing his life. It reveals so much about others and how they perceive the homeless and down-on-their-luck. It does much to reinforce my belief that animals are put here to make us better people, so we should be their guardians and protectors in return. Awesome book.

    Compelling

I love this book. I adopted three little boys, aged 3,5, and 8. They are now 11,13, and 15. We home school abroad as my husband has a job in the Middle East. We love cats and have rescued and boarded several mistreated cats whilst we have been in our present location. After school or dinner we dug into A Street Cat Named Bob to practice reading out loud. I had read the story and found it to be a truly inspiring, and heartwarming life story. I really admired James Bowen's strength and tenacity to overcome an initial immature poor choice which set him at odds with life. I hold James Bowen and his beautiful, sensitive bff [best friend forever] Bob as a tower of strength over my boys, who had equally troubled beginnings, and who have had to overcome a lot of heartache in their own young lives. Congratulations to James and Bob. Revisiting your life to document learning from what you live, is not easy... in fact it is anything but easy. I commend James' courage to confront his life and turn it around. The book is factual, loving, sensitive, heartfelt, self deprecating in such a humble way, I would defy anyone not to fall in love with James and Bob. Amen. Linda @ Kitty-Kare.com I absolutely cannot wait to get started on his sequels!

A TALE OF DELIVERANCE & SALVATION. SHEER CHRISTMAS MAGIC
ByStar of Indiaon December 7, 2014|Verified Purchase
Loving animals I very rarely like to read novels based on them. This time traveling far away from home I saw the book with a catchy picture of Bob traveling on the shoulders of his best friend and I was hooked. Ordered the book that would take longer that I had hoped for and realizing I wanted to read it fast before my next travel took advantage of a great dis count given for the same book in e-format. I finished it too fast and when the book arrives will give it to my friend a dog lover that is the Mother Theresa of dogs, she will love it too and will be amused to get into the soul of Bob a very spirited cat.

The book is a tale of redemption for a young fellow who is struggling with his life and keeping his modest flat. He is suddenly gifted with the friendship of a vulnerable stray cat. In helping the wounds of the stray he opens doors that lead him to his own salvation regaining his self of purpose and direction. The authors ability to make us become three musketeers in the story is a pleasure. I learned from the author how painful and scary is to recover from drug addiction and how seemingly easy drugs offer a quick solution to emotional pain and loneliness. The love of Bob teaches us how love and care needs no quick fixes that lead to a dangerous downfall. A great Christmas book with adventure and a magic message.

I will never look at a homeless person the same way again...
    ByJanGon March 2, 2017|Verified Purchase
What a beautiful and articulate story about the goodness that lives in every person and the power of connection to a sentient being that can lift even the most desolate out of the ashes...the fact that it was about a cat was cool too...
